Pope Benedict XVI Love in Truth

In case any of you missed it, the Pope came out with his 3rd papal encyclical a few weeks ago: Caritas In Veritate (Love in Truth).  It’s worth a read by any human being seeking wisdom.  And it is very timely considering many of the challenges we find ourselves facing today.

In a sea of moral relativism teaming with things called “love,” the pope reminds us that finding authentic love requires a compass of objective Truth.

“Truth needs to be sought, found and expressed within the “economy” of charity, but charity in its turn needs to be understood, confirmed and practised in the light of truth. In this way, not only do we do a service to charity enlightened by truth, but we also help give credibility to truth, demonstrating its persuasive and authenticating power in the practical setting of social living. This is a matter of no small account today, in a social and cultural context which relativizes truth, often paying little heed to it and showing increasing reluctance to acknowledge its existence.” – Pope Benedict XVI

Good Fridays: Like THE Good Friday

I’m not spending much time on the computer over the Easter Triduum, but wanted to just pass along some thoughts from Pope Benedict on the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of The Lord. It is taken from one of his general audiences from a few years ago. Hope you enjoy and have a blessed [...]

Catholics on Condoms for AIDS in Africa

Recently the Pope visited Africa. While there, he was questioned about the Church’s prohibition on condom use in regard to the AIDS epidemic there. Here’s a little bit of what he said:

Quote of the Day: Transubstantiwutty?

A couple of awesome quotes from Cardinal Ratzinger (who is now Pope Benedict XVI) reflecting on transubstantiation – the changing of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. A great mystery of our faith that seems at least a tad less mysterious after reading these:

How Many Popes Have There Been?

The first pope of the Catholic Church was St. Peter, the apostle.
Since then, there have been a total of 266 popes in a continuous line of apostolic succession spanning almost 2000 years. The current pope (#266) is Benedict XVI.

Good Fridays: New video, new channel, new president

March for Life
Tens of thousands (perhaps more) showed up to march on Washington and demand real change.  And even though the press every year largely tries to pretend it didn’t happen – it’s good.

The Fathers – by Pope Benedict XVI

Recently, I decided to read and review a series of books by Pope Benedict XVI that just seemed like they should all go together. I started with Jesus of Nazareth, followed by The Apostles, and now his book on The Fathers. Together they paint an amazing picture of the springing forth of Christianity [...]

Quote of the Day: No room in the inn

Here are some reflections from Pope Benedict XVI on the room we (don’t) make for God in our lives.  It’s sad that we didn’t have room for Jesus in the world 2000 years ago.  We told Jesus and his parents “there is no room in the inn for you” as Mary and Joseph were searching [...]

Book Review: The Apostles – by Pope Benedict XVI

The actual full title of this book is “The Origins of the Church, The Apostles and Their Co-Workers.” It was actually a fairly light read compared to most Benedict XVI books that I’ve read. Very profound, but not as academic. Which was nice for the average fella’ like me.
It gives you all [...]

Book Review: Jesus of Nazareth – by Pope Benedict XVI

In true Benedict XVI fashion, this book presents a remarkably clear, yet profound picture of the historical Jesus. At a time when the subject of history is treated more like relativistic opinion than objective truth, Pope Benedict XVI is a voice of reason and clarity amongst the confusion.
He doesn’t shout. He’s speaks softly [...]

Praying as we ought

I am not going to tell anyone the best way for them to pray. But what seems evident is that, when it comes to how to pray, we are not capable of getting it entirely right on our own.
Some say it is as simple as just talking to God.  And it can be.  And [...]

God is Love

“Deus Caritas Est.” God is Love. I have spent a lot of time praying and thinking about what to write for my first blog. I would get a surge of inspiration about an idea, start pouring it onto a page, and then get half way through it and think, “this could be a good article, [...]
