The Mount Vernon Statement

I like this:

The conservatism of the Declaration asserts self-evident truths based on the laws of nature and nature’s God. It defends life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It traces authority to the consent of the governed. It recognizes man’s self-interest but also his capacity for virtue.
[...]
A Constitutional conservatism unites all conservatives through the natural fusion provided by American principles. It reminds economic conservatives that morality is essential to limited government, social conservatives that unlimited government is a threat to moral self-government, and national security conservatives that energetic but responsible government is the key to America’s safety and leadership role in the world. (from The Mount Vernon Statement)

People often ask why God doesn’t reveal himself to us with more evidence of his existence. To me that seems like the absolute worst case of not seeing the forest for the trees.

When I look around all I see is evidence of a great, good, intelligent, loving creator. What a great gift this world is.

Did God Create Evil?

One of the most common arguments against God is the existence of evil and suffering in the world. “How could a loving God have created a world with such evil and suffering?” they ask.

Remembering 9-11

Thumbnail image for Remembering 9-11

I hope we’ll never forget this tragedy. It should always remain a reminder of many things, including just how fragile life and the privileges that come with it are. It should especially remind us of our freedom to fully express and live out our faith. America is a unique place in this [...]

Reading the Stars is totally Christian! Thank you, NASA

Thumbnail image for Reading the Stars is totally Christian! Thank you, NASA

Yes, reading stars can be a totally Christian thing to do.  It just depends on how you’re reading them.
Of course, if you are using them to try and predict the future in some weird astrological and horoscopical (is that a word?  No…no it’s not) type of way then, yes, that contradicts a sound Christian faith.  [...]

Quote: Life is complicated – deal with it

“A basic fact about the universe faced by all grownups is that life is complicated. Therefore, a revelation which claims to help us navigate the enormous complexity of human existence is going to be complex too. To protest this is like demanding the science of cardiology be “simplified” or declaring that doctors have made the [...]

What are the three Theological Virtues?

Last week I mentioned the four cardinal virtues.  Today we will talk about the three theological virtues.
If you’ve ever wanted to systematically break down the key things to focus on in order to live a good, moral life and to commune with God, the four cardinal virtues and three theological virtues are where to [...]

What are the Four Cardinal Virtues?

What are they? Why are they “cardinal”? Where do they come from? Who decided on them? And why should I care?
In the great movie, Gladiator, the whiny son of the emperor is complaining to his dad…
“You wrote to me once, listing the four chief virtues: Wisdom, justice, fortitude and temperance. As I read the list, [...]

Quote: Has God done enough?

“Have you ever heard someone say, ‘If God wants us to believe in Him, why doesn’t He just reveal Himself?’ It seems like a reasonable request, but it overlooks the fact that he did reveal Himself, and we crucified Him. What else does He need to do? Write a book about Himself? [...]

Quote: If there is no God

This is one of those logical conclusions that atheists (and their close cousins, moral relativists) don’t like to make.
“If there is no God, everything is permissible.” – Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Good Fridays: Different views of God

Fr. Barron talks about a few of the most common views of God that people hold and have held throughout history.  Interesting stuff and well articulated, as usual, by Fr. Barron.  I hope everyone is having a great Friday and Feast of St. Joseph the Worker!

Religulous is Ridiculous

Bill Maher recently came out with a new movie called “Religulous.”  It’s basically a “documentary” attacking religion and a belief in God.
Unfortunately, it’s another example of how many modern atheists simply, totally and utterly miss the point.  And I’m not just saying that because I disagree with them.  It’s because they make all of these [...]

And To Dust You Shall Return

And so the season of Lent begins. If you attended Ash Wednesday mass yesterday and received ashes then you heard one of two things while receiving your ashes. The meaning of one seems fairly obvious. The other seems to confuse people sometimes – but it shouldn’t.
The obvious one is “Turn away from sin [...]

Quote of the Day: All ablaze

“If you are what you should be, you will set the whole world ablaze!” – St. Catherine of Siena
If you want to truly be original – be yourself.  And if you want to be truly successful in life?  If you want to make a difference?  If you want to accomplish the most good in [...]

Quote of the Day: The complete abandon of self

“Few souls understand what God would accomplish in them if they were to abandon themselves unreservedly to Him and if they were to allow His grace to mold them accordingly.” – St. Ignatius of Loyola
We use the word faith a lot. This is what it actually means to have it.
