Freedom

Post image for Don’t Waste Your Freedom

Freedom is wasted when not used for these ends: the pursuit of the true, the good and the beautiful.

“Life is not just a succession of events or experiences: it is a search for the true, the good and the beautiful. It is to this end that we make our choices; it is for this that we exercise our freedom; it is in this – in truth, in goodness, and in beauty – that we find happiness and joy. We must not allow ourselves to be deceived by those who see us merely as consumers in a market of undifferentiated possibilities, where choice itself becomes the good, novelty usurps beauty, and subjective experience displaces truth.” – Pope Benedict XVI (New Technologies, New Relationships.)

“Choice becomes the good, novelty usurps beauty, and subjective experience displaces truth”? Sounds uncomfortably familiar.

Here are some very good and appropriate video tributes to those – past, present, and future – who sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy. Thank you, Veterans.

A Tired Democracy

Thumbnail image for A Tired Democracy

“A despotism may almost be defined as a tired democracy. As fatigue falls on a community, the citizens are less inclined for that eternal vigilance which has truly been called the price of liberty; and they prefer to arm only one single sentinel to watch the city while they sleep.” – G. K. Chesterton

Mojave Cross Under Attack – Supreme Court will decide, you take the poll!

Thumbnail image for Mojave Cross Under Attack – Supreme Court will decide, you take the poll!

The Mojave Cross is a veteran’s memorial located on the Mojave National Preserve. That’s the problem, though – at least for one person and the ACLU. They believe that such an expression of religion (a cross) on public land is unconstitutional. It’s an increasingly annoying conflict that continues to rear its confusing, [...]

The American Health Care Reformation

Thumbnail image for The American Health Care Reformation

In recent weeks, three major Catholic organizations have shown questionable support for the current health care reform efforts.  This has revealed either a huge naiveté or a blatant ideological bias on their part.  Perhaps it is both.  I don’t know but I wish it weren’t so.
The organizations are The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, [...]

Quote of the Day: The rational free choice

“A man has free choice to the extent that he is rational.” – St. Thomas Aquinas
I thought this was an insightful quote from this great doctor of the Church. He seems to be suggesting that our choices are truly only “free” if we are using our rational thought – if we are rationally embracing [...]

The Battle of Religious Freedom and Government Kingdom

There are two trends in America that anyone of religious faith (actually everyone) should be very worried about.  And the danger is that when seen by themselves these two trends may not seem all that alarming.  But together they spell the end of your religious freedom.  Sounds like I’m exaggerating, right? Using hyperbole to make [...]

A Bill Called Stimulus and The Real Crisis

The Republicans – forced to be principled once again – are at least back to doing one of the things they were always good at: keeping the Democrats from totally messing up our country.
We’ll see how well they do and if they hold their ground.  Unfortunately, with the overwhelming majorities given to the Democrats in [...]

Quote of the Day: True freedom

“Finally, true freedom is not advanced in the permissive society, which confuses freedom with license to do anything whatever and which in the name of freedom proclaims a kind of general amorality. It is a caricature of freedom to claim that people are free to organize their lives with no reference to moral values, and [...]

The freedom to freely practice

There’s no doubt America has changed from the place it first began.  Some ways for the better.  Some ways for the worse.
But in the midst of the day-to-day noise and our sensitivity to our immediate emotion and need, every once in awhile we need to step outside and see things from a bigger perspective.
We need [...]
