Post image for FAIL: Rep. Kennedy publicly takes on bishop over communion

My comments in blue:

U.S. Representative Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) said in an interview Sunday that Providence Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has instructed him to refrain from Communion because of his pro-abortion political position [So the bishop is doing his job and has privately reminded Kennedy that he shouldn't present himself for communion while being publicly complicit in grave sin]. In response to Kennedy’s statement, Bishop Tobin has clarified that his request was issued in 2007 and was not the result of the recent highly public exchange between Kennedy and himself.  [Oh Snap.  So Kennedy is the one who decided to embarrass himself by making this thing public and is seemingly trying to use it in some sort of political game?  I don't get it.  Just seems pretty ignorant and arrogant to me.  Not only was it appropriate of the bishop to ask this of Kennedy for the purpose of preventing public scandal, but it was for the benefit of Kennedy's soul.  And this is how Kennedy shows his thanks?  The bishop very well could have made it a public statement to Kennedy in the first place as Kennedy is creating public scandal with his receiving communion while publicly supporting abortion.  But Bishop Tobin very generously did not do that.]

[Kennedy, the fact that you didn't know you shouldn't be taking communion in the first place and had to have your bishop tell you is pretty embarrassing.  I wouldn't go telling the press or anything.] “The bishop instructed me not to take Communion and said that he has instructed the diocesan priests not to give me Communion,” Kennedy told the Providence Journal. [doh!]

The admission comes after a verbal fight between Kennedy and Bishop Tobin, sparked by Kennedy’s saying that the Church was fanning the “flames of dissent and discord” by opposing the health care bill then in the House, which would have brought about federally-funded abortions. Kennedy also questioned whether or not the bishops were really “pro-life” based upon their opposition to the health bill. [Riiigggghtt - what kind of bubble is this guy living in?]

[Understatement alert.] Bishop Tobin responded by calling Kennedy a “disappointment to the Catholic Church and the citizens of Rhode Island. [full story]“

Kennedy – take a survival lesson from all the other bad Catholics in public life: [Keep Reading]

Eucharist - consecration - transubstantiation

When was “Transubstantiation” invented?  And who invented it?

First of all, what is “Transubstantiation”?

[It is] the complete change of the substance of bread and wine into the substance of Christ’s body and blood by a validly ordained priest during the consecration at Mass, so that only the accidents of bread and wine remain.

The red candle near the altar

It’s quite beautiful how many ornate, interesting, priceless things can be found in Catholic Churches. But the meaning behind all of them is actually the most beautiful part.

Can a Catholic receive Communion more than once a Day?

Yes. A Catholic can receive Communion more than once in a single day – but no more than twice a day.

Quote of the Day: You shall not have life within you

This scripture passage records one of the most explicit explanations Jesus gives to the Apostles on how to attain everlasting life by participation in the Eucharist. He later demonstrates the fullness of this teaching for us at the Last Supper (the first Mass) – which we celebrate today on this Holy Thursday.

Quote of the Day: Pro-choice politicians and Communion

Unfortunately, a lot of Catholics still don’t get it. Here’s is yet another quote from a Bishop clarifying the issue:

Quote of the Day: Transubstantiwutty?

A couple of awesome quotes from Cardinal Ratzinger (who is now Pope Benedict XVI) reflecting on transubstantiation – the changing of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. A great mystery of our faith that seems at least a tad less mysterious after reading these:

Did Jesus Drink Alcohol?

For the first 1800-1900 years of Christianity, drinking alcohol in moderation was one more way to enjoy God’s gifts. But a movement in the social politic of America in the early 1900’s suddenly changed some protestant denominations stance on alcohol consumption.
These groups began teaching that drinking alcohol was always or almost always a sin. This [...]

Christ’s Mass and the 12 Days of Christmas

So where does the word Christmas come form anyway?
Well, it’s simply the words “Christ” and “Mass” put together. Christ – referring to Jesus Christ – means “Anointed.” And the “Mass” in Christianity is the celebration of the Eucharist – Jesus’ body and blood made present (also known as the Lord’s Supper…instituted by Christ [...]

The Real First Thanksgiving

The Pilgrims and Native Americans were onto something with this whole giving thanks thing. But they were by no means the first to do it.
It was actually a common practice by many of the Native Americans already. They would give thanks every year for the harvest – the food that sustained them for [...]

Pavlov’s Catholic: Genuflecting

I was at a movie theater looking for a seat. I eyed some open chairs past a row of people.
As I approached the row of chairs, I felt this overwhelming urge to drop down to one knee and make the sign of the cross. Luckily, I stopped before embarrassing myself too much.
But it made me [...]

Not Just Another Denomination: Part 2 of 2

In the first part of this article we tried to put denominational Christianity into proper perspective and showed, above all, that Jesus created one, organized, visible, authoritative Church.
We also suggested that when we put aside our own cultural predispositions to denominational Christianity, that the one Church that Jesus founded seems to look like the Catholic [...]
