Quote of the Day: Mother Teresa on abortion

Mother Teresa is one of the most peaceful and humble souls of the century. It’s a blessing that she left us with so many strong statements on the sin of abortion and its destruction in our world.

The greatest destroyer of peace:

“I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself.” – Mother Teresa

“And if we can accept that a mother can kill her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another?” – Mother Teresa

On countries that accept abortion:

“Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion” – Mother Teresa

“Any country that accepts abortion is the poorest of the poor” – Mother Teresa

This next quote is very powerful coming from somebody who spent most of her life personally embracing the homeless, sick, and suffering of India:

“Many people are concerned with children of India, with the children of Africa where quite a few die of hunger, and so on. Many people are also concerned about the violence in this great country of the United States. These concerns are very good. But often these same people are not concerned with the millions being killed by the deliberate decision of their own mothers. And this is the greatest destroyer of peace today- abortion which brings people to such blindness.” – Mother Teresa

“It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish” – Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa’s words are moving and powerful because she spoke with sincere love. Perhaps we will be more effective at protecting life at all stages when we learn to communicate our viewpoint with love and not with anger. There has been a lot of hand-wringing in the past few months regarding the election of Barack Obama and what that means to the pro-life movement. We have had both pro-life and pro-choice administrations since the Roe decision and it remains the law of the land. I believe that prayer is more powerful that lawsuits and that speaking to women about their babies with love is more effective than screaming at them on a sidewalk or ranting on a radio show. May God allow me to walk with Mother Teresa on a path of humility and love.

This Friday night, our parish is hosting a Youth/Young Adult Rally for Life in preparation for the Walk for Life West Coast. We have goodie bags for all the participants and have included a bookmark with the Mother Teresa quote: “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish”. Hope this resonates with everyone.

Thanks for recounting her quotes on abortion.
