Do you truly know what you are supporting?

October 31, 2008 · 8 comments

Continuing in my recent blogging theme of truly facing reality so that we can be informed voters, here is one last post (at least before the election) to help us do this.  I will warn you now that this post is not suitable for children or squeamish adults.  It will draw attention to some brutal things in this world that we often like to pretend don’t exist.

Children are not ready to face these realities.  But, as responsible adults, our choices are to ignore them or to face them.  Ignoring them breeds indifference and therefore continued suffering.  On the other hand, facing them stirs a grounded compassion and action to end these hard realities.

Facing reality is what animates us to make real differences in this world.

Whether it is feeding the hungry, helping the poor, supporting a friend’s depression, going out of our way to smile at a sad person, defeating an enemy, or standing up for those that can not stand up for themselves; all are made possible by our first being aware of the reality of a particular injustice.  If we choose to be ignorant of those things then these evils go un-confronted.

When this whole “war on terror” began we were faced with a very harsh reality on 9/11/2001.  Over 3000 Americans were murdered in a single day by terrorists.  It was no longer possible to ignore these threats anymore.  Our entire world and lives changed due to this event.  And spurred on by our compassion and spirit, we confronted them.  And now we have not had another attack on our soil since.

Everyday in this country over 3000 babies are killed, but yet we don’t react the same way?  Why not?  I would suggest that it is because we have not been forced to face this reality.  We have enjoyed our freedom to ignore it for too long

Well I’m asking you (not forcing, of course) to face this reality now – if you can.  Whether you are pro-choice or pro-life, we should all be able to face the reality of what we are voting for.  We each have a moral culpability for the consequences of the votes we make – whether we choose to be informed or not.

And maybe our human brains aren’t supposed to see these harsh realities.  We just weren’t made for it.  I agree.  But, unfortunately, that’s not because we aren’t supposed to face them.  It’s because stuff like that isn’t supposed to happen to humans, period.

But since this stuff does happen to humans, we can either ignore it and allow it to continue or we can face this hard reality and be stirred into action to bring about its end.

Eduardo Verastegui, a famous actor, has released a new video.  It is entitled “Dura Realidad” – Hard Reality.  He talks about the issue of abortion in it.  But the most stirring part is a section in the middle that shows a glimpse of the reality of abortion.  What is shown very graphically here is exactly what you are voting for, or against, in this election.  It is real.

I know there are other issues.  I know many of these issues have hard realities of their own.  But nobody can watch this video (and then multiply it by 3000 times every single day) and then say that any other issue compares.  If they can, then I don’t believe they are living in reality.

(One more warning: This video has extremely graphic images. Please do not watch if you can not handle it.)

I was hesitant to even link to this video because I will no doubt be accused of trying to only shock people or scare people with it.  But if the truth shocks us, it probably means that we needed to be shocked.  So here is the truth: Hard Reality

If you watched the video, then I commend your courage.  What you just watched was not made up or pretend – it was real.

If you could not watch the video, then please continue to inform yourself and your friends in other ways about what you are voting for.

Here is one example of many great videos from Priests for Life that explains a little bit more of the reality of abortion (It is not very graphic).  So please at least watch this if you could not watch the video above.  God bless you.

P.S. I also realize that watching a video does not make abortion as much of a reality as it is for those that actually face and perform abortions.  But I think it gets us a lot closer.  Please continue to pray for mothers who are considering or have faced abortions and for the doctors and all of those who support abortions.

SO very hard to imagine such a thing could happen even once in this country, much less, on the scale of a 9-11 EVERY DAY !!!
People need to understand this and face up to what we really are as a country.
We need some CHANGE alright !

More refreshing and inspirational articles Mr Warner.
I hope for the sake of the all the world that there are enough right minded people that will vote wisely.
The alternative will be a disaster, the likes of wich we now have in New Zealand.(sodom and gomorrah)

In addition to getting “closer” to the details, we could also step back and look at the larger picture.

Wow, as an avid Catholic and; likewise, patron of Father Pavon and Priests for life I would have to say well done. Sadly the number one thing I hear people say when they speak of abortion is that it is a CHOICE. As any believer knows this is not the case it is a LIFE and should be respected as such. God Bless and keep up the great works.

Bubba,

That does show some of the positive things that have happened in the pro-life movement – thanks for sharing. But that real “larger picture” still shows the fact that we still have well over a million of these abortions each year in our country. Which means we’ve still got A LOT more work to do.

Further, an Obama presidency could wipe ALL of that work out very quickly. Especially with his promise to pass the “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA), which would attempt to codify a “right” to kill your baby. And if he picks up enough seats in the Senate and House then he could do it very easily. Very dangerous and very bad for America.
