Archbishop: 26 books I wish all Catholics would read

November 6, 2009 · 4 comments

Want some recommendations on some great books to add to your reading list?  Archbishop Chaput gives you his top 10…OK, top 26 books he thinks every Catholic should read.

If Archbishop Chaput thinks every Catholic should read these books, I’m gonna do it.  He’s an outstanding leader of the Catholic Church with a good sense of current events, culture and what Americans need to hear most right now.  I’ve read a lot of these already…but lots of news ones have just been added to my reading list.

The books look good and include many that I already planned to read. But I’m disappointed that he didn’t include books on apologetics or spiritual warfare in the list. Apologetics is critical to stem the tide of ex-Catholics who are drawn to the flash of fundamentalist worship and steered from the Church by their lies (Mary worship, tradition of man, falsehood of the eucharist, etc.). And most Catholics are woefully unprepared for assaults by Satan and his minions. Even some priests minimize the importance of this, although Jesus spent much of his ministry confronting Satan and casting out demons.

For some reason, I think Archbishop Cahput (who rocks, by the way) is a C.S. Lewis fan. Maybe I’m wrong, but 50% of the list says I am so right.

As far as apologetics is concerned. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis constitute apologetics. But yes, there aren’t any Catholic apologetic books there.
